Our People

Following Our Passion

"There is a vitality, a life-force, an energy, a quickening that is translated through you into action and because there is only one of you in all time, this expression is unique. And if you block it, it will never exist through any other medium and be lost. The world will not have it. It is not your business to determine how good it is, nor how it compares with other expressions. It is your business to keep it yours, clearly and directly, to keep the channel open."

Jeff Spitzmiller, CFA®RLP®

Life Planning & Investment Counselor

CHIEF COMPLIANCE OFFICER

Being a part of the planning and investment community for over twenty-five years, I knew something was missing from the traditional financial planning and wealth management process. There was too much focus on spreadsheets, retirement  projections and budgets and not enough on getting to deeply know the client and what their true motivations and passions were. After receiving training and going through the life planning process myself, Ohana Wealth & Life Planning was born with the goal of helping those in our community find and nurture their life’s purpose. For me personally, Ohana has allowed me to create a way to align my career to be more integrated and consistent with my personal values.

Responsibilities

As the CEO, I support the overall direction of the firm with the core focus of how we can add meaning and value to our client relationships. I am also responsible for the research and investment policy functions as well as overseeing the life planning process at Ohana. I began my investment management and wealth planning career in Cincinnati in 1994, and I have worked with both regional and national investment firms in various roles such as Chief Investment Officer and Chief Investment Strategist. In 2012, I started Queen City Capital Management, which I still run, and more recently Ohana Wealth and Life Planning.

Education/Training

  • Bachelor of Business Administration degree with a major in Finance from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio
  • Master of Science degree in Management with specialization in Banking and Financial Services Management from Boston University
  • Chartered Financial Analyst™ (CFA®)
  • Registered Life Planner (RLP®) designation from the Kinder Institute of Life Planning

Your Story

The most important thing to me is living a life of purpose that revolves around my family, friends and community. Traveling and spending time in nature with my wife and daughter help keep me grounded and energized. Personal interests also include music, watching my daughter play volleyball and hanging out with all of my pets (2 dogs and 4 cats). In addition, health and fitness is a major focus, with my passion being studying the “Secret Yang” style Tai Chi at the White Willow School of Tai Chi. I have also found that doing what’s best for my personal health goals can also positively impact the planet and the animals we share it with. Eating organically, supporting farmers that practice regenerative soil practices and have a focus on animal welfare and the environment are areas of special importance to me. I also enjoy supporting local farmers and artisans, growing my own herbs and vegetables, and finding ways to reduce my environmental footprint.

Favorite Motivational Quote

“Life is brief. Existence is fragile. But we are here right now, so let’s make the most of it. Let’s be the best people we can while we still have the chance. Do not fear death it is outside your control. Instead, embrace it. Use it to create urgency, gratitude, and most of all, meaning.” - Ryan Holiday

Over the past few years the financial planning process has become commoditized,  digitized, and over-simplified. Individuals have become a series of data points and it seems that all that matters is their income, their savings, the retirement age, and their risk score. This type of planning wasn’t what encouraged me to become a financial planner. I was drawn to this business because I want to utilize personal connections  as the  foundation on which we build financial plans that help my clients live their best lives. Ohana gives me the opportunity to do exactly that. Ohana Life Planning connects the dots between our client’s financial realities and the lives they were meant to live. No longer am I simply guiding a client to their retirement years, but I am helping them uncover their true purpose and meaning.

Responsibilities

One of the things I love about working for a small company is the fact that I never have just one job or role at any time; every day is a new adventure with new challenges. In the simplest terms I would say my role is discovering new opportunities. Some days I will find myself working with Jeff to discover new investment opportunities that fulfil our goal of Investing with Purpose. Other days it will be a collaboration with Susan to discover opportunities to improve our client experience, leveraging the latest and greatest technology and trends. The most rewarding opportunities I am tasked with discovering are opportunities for Ohana to give back to the community, whether it is through volunteering, monetary donation or simply spreading awareness.

Education/Training

  • Bachelor’s Degrees in Finance and International Business from the Carl H Lindner College of Business at the University of Cincinnati.
  • Certified Financial Planner™
  • Behavioral Financial Advisor™
  • FINRA Securities Licenses 7,65 and 24
  • Health, Life and Disability Insurance Licensed

Your Story

My family is everything to me and has made me who I am today. I grew up in an immediate family of nine and an extended family too large to count. Now I have started a family of my own with my wonderful wife, Kirbi and our young son, Henry. My life revolves around my family and taking on new adventures with them every day. Whether it’s spending summer evenings with the entire family on Williamstown Lake, coaching and playing Special Olympics soccer with my brothers, or discovering new adventures in Cincinnati with Kirbi and Henry on Sunday afternoons, we are always exploring and making memories.

Your Motivation

My motivation, without a doubt, is my young family. It is my goal to do and be better for them every day. I strive to be a better professional so I can support them financially, be a better member of society by always trying to give back, and to leave for them a better world through extensive recycling and environmental efforts.

Since having children, my ohana has changed – my family is bigger, my inner circle has become more focused, and my community has grown larger. I believe that providing the best for my children (food, education, cultural experience, etc.) starts with the community I cultivate for them. I strive to create a healthy atmosphere for my family, and thus a positive impact on the environment, by eliminating chemicals in the home and choosing sustainably sourced, healthy foods. We support businesses that align with our values and help us achieve our goals for our health, lifestyle and the environment.

Responsibilities

In a nutshell, I oversee all the back office functions that ensure a positive client experience, from setting up accounts and maintaining client records to processing service requests and generating performance reports. I’ve been a part of the team since 2010, developing and maintaining policies and procedures, executing marketing plans, and implementing the strategic direction of the firm.

Bachelor Science degree with a major in Service Management and minor in Business Administration from The University of Tennessee in Knoxville, TN
